How local businesses get named in ChatGPT and Google AI answers

By Jamie Mentzer, founder of AI2Market · October 2026

In short

AI answers are built from sources the AI can read and trust. Google says there are no special tricks for AI Overviews or AI Mode: the normal SEO basics apply. So let the crawlers in, answer buyer questions plainly on your site, keep your business details the same everywhere, earn real reviews and mentions, and check the same questions every month.

Why it matters now

In a Pew Research Center study published in July 2025, people who saw a Google AI summary clicked a regular search result on 8% of visits, compared with 15% when no summary appeared. They clicked a link inside the summary on just 1% of visits. When the answer is on the page, being named in it matters more than ranking below it.

What Google says

Google's own guidance for site owners says there are no extra requirements or special optimizations for AI Overviews or AI Mode, that standard SEO best practices still apply, and that you don't need special AI text files or extra markup. Its Search team has also said llms.txt isn't needed for its AI features.

The five checks

  1. Let them in. Your robots.txt and any firewall or bot-blocking setting should allow Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT search) and PerplexityBot.
  2. Answer first. Put the plain answer in the first lines of each service page, then the detail. Add a short FAQ with the questions buyers really ask.
  3. Same details everywhere. Your business name, address, phone and hours should match on your site, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, LinkedIn and the main directories.
  4. Earn real mentions. Reviews, local press, YouTube explainers, LinkedIn articles and genuine answers in community forums. Never fake reviews; the FTC banned fake reviews and testimonials in 2024.
  5. Show the expert. A real person, a real bio and credentials stated exactly as they are.

What to skip

  • Anyone promising guaranteed AI placement. Nobody controls those answers.
  • Mass-produced AI pages that say nothing new.
  • Paying for llms.txt files as a Google ranking trick.

How to measure it

Write down 20 questions your buyers really ask, with your city in them. Once a month, ask them in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, and note who gets named and which sources are cited. Answers vary by person, place and day, so look at the trend over a few months, not a single result.

What is AEO?
Answer engine optimization: helping AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI features find your business, understand it and name it in their answers.
Is AEO different from SEO?
It builds on SEO. Google says the same basics apply. AEO adds work on answer-first content, consistent details, mentions and AI crawler access.
How long does it take?
Technical fixes take days. Content, reviews and mentions build over months.
Can anyone guarantee I'll be recommended?
No. You can show what changed and track the same questions every month.
